YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Wildcats, one of 24 teams at the event, including strong contenders including Hudson, Massillon Jackson, and Mentor, faced significant challenges during the meet. The team experienced a setback when Peter Spellacy was unfortunately spiked and unable to finish the race. Despite this, the Wildcats rallied, demonstrating the depth and spirit of their squad. Junior Maxwell Friedrich led the charge with an impressive time of 15:36.30, securing second place overall at the Regional Meet.
Other notable performances included senior Cael Luecke, who ran a personal best of 16:20.76. His outstanding effort in the final stretch was crucial, helping the Wildcats secure their fourth-place finish. Teammates Brian Geary, Benedikt Mellion, Matt Rowell, and William Caryl also contributed significantly, with their times reflecting a collective effort that underscored the team's determination and capability.
Junior Max Friedrich reflected on his performance, saying, "I felt great out there."
"Cross Country can be an amazing team sport, and today was a great example. One of our best runners and leaders goes down during the race, and the rest of the team steps up for each other," says Head Cross Country Coach Bob Wolf '08. "They have worked hard this season, and I am so proud of how they earned the trip to the State Meet."
The Wildcats are gearing up for the OHSAA State Meet, scheduled for Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Fortress Obetz in Columbus. The team is focused on maintaining its form and running a great race as it is the first time since 2021 the Cat Pack have secured a spot at the State Meet.
