OHIO CITY, OH - Saint Ignatius continued their 2025-26 campaign on Saturday against Berlin Hiland. The Hawks, who finished with a 21-3 record last season, made the trip to Ohio City for their first-ever matchup against the Wildcats. Facing off against Saint Ignatius in Sullivan Gym has not fared well for opponents in recent years, as the Wildcats have not lost on their home court since 2023 against Western Reserve.
The Hawks, led by sophomore Ryan Zerger and senior Alex Miller, play at an extremely slow pace, working their offense. In their opening 47-43 loss to John Glenn, Zerger scored 17, but their pace slowed the game down. The Hawks would continue this offensive philosophy against Saint Ignatius.
Despite grabbing a multitude of offensive rebounds, the Hawks were not able to fully capitalize on their second chances. The stifling Wildcat defense only allowed 35 points, as Hiland struggled to shoot the three or establish an interior presence. The Wildcats coasted to a 51-35 victory, beginning the season 3-0 for the third consecutive year.
"Always bringing a spark off the bench is kind of what I do," says junior guard
Sami Dari, who earned SIBN Player of the Game honors for his nine points and playmaking. Dari added three assists in a career game for the junior.
RJ Jones continued his emergence as the Wildcats' number one option on Saturday. He scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, adding seven rebounds.
Sophomore
Denahi Melton showcased his playmaking ability, tallying nine points in his third varsity start. Melton is averaging seven points per game this season, showing that he can lead Saint Ignatius' backcourt for years to come.
Next, the Wildcats' schedule becomes extremely difficult. They will host Canton McKinley on Saturday night, a rematch of the 2025 Regional Final. After that, Saint Ignatius will travel down I-71 to take on Olentangy Orange at Capital University on December 20th, a rematch of the State Semifinal. The Pioneers are the reigning Division I Champions. The SIBN will have live video coverage of both contests.
