Wildcats Sweep the Bees Ahead of Rivalry Match

The Volleyball Cats continue to dominate on their home court, and will host the Eagles on Friday.

OHIO CITY, OH - Saint Ignatius took care of a test Wednesday night, beating Medina 3-0 by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-11 at Sullivan Gym. In a match up between two of the top Division I teams in the region per MaxPreps, the Wildcats weathered a competitive opening set, then let their size, strength, and steady attack take over the rest of the night.

Medina pushed Saint Ignatius early and made the first set a fight, but the Wildcats found their rhythm as the match settled in. Gavin Schafer delivered the finishing spike in set one to close a 25-19 win, a sign of what was coming from the opposite side. Saint Ignatius kept pressure on Medina with efficient offense and clean distribution, and once the Wildcats gained control, they rarely let it go.

The second set turned quickly in Saint Ignatius' favor. Jack Ragon sparked that push from the service line with consecutive aces during an early run that helped stretch the lead, and the Wildcats kept stacking points behind a balanced offense. Setter Andrew Brobbey orchestrated the attack all evening, piling up 31 assists while guiding Saint Ignatius to a team hitting efficiency of .569. Schafer finished with 13 kills and a .579 hitting efficiency, and he again supplied the final point of the set on another match-point spike as the Wildcats rolled to a 25-15 decision.

By the third set, Saint Ignatius was fully in command. Ragon continued to make his presence felt in every phase, finishing with eight kills, six aces, seven digs, and a block. His back-to-back aces helped the Wildcats build separation again, and the defense added key stops at the net as Medina struggled to generate sustained runs. Saint Ignatius also benefited from timely blocking throughout the match, including the final play, when Brandon Walrod and Carson Nekic teamed up on the block that ended the set, 25-11, and sealed the sweep.

The numbers underscored just how sharp the Wildcats were. Saint Ignatius totaled 75 points, won all three sets, and piled up 33 kills, 11 aces, and several momentum-changing blocks.

Brobbey also added two aces and two digs, while the play-by-play repeatedly showed him setting up the Wildcats' top hitters. Against a quality Medina team, Saint Ignatius did more than win; the Wildcats showed the kind of poise and firepower that can make Sullivan Gym a difficult place for anyone to visit.

The Cats are back in action on Friday, April 17, to host the St. Edward Eagles from Sullivan Gym. The SIBN will have live coverage.
