OHIO CITY, OH - The Saint Ignatius Wildcats were back in action last weekend, facing off against two highly rated teams in Ohio in St. Edward and Olentangy Orange. After an intense win against St. Vincent-St. Mary on New Year's Eve, the Cats would look to continue their dominance against their esteemed rivals, the St. Edward Eagles.
The Cats were on fire out of the gate, commanding a 21-12 advantage into the second quarter. But, the Wildcats didn't stop there. They smothered the Eagles in every aspect of the game during the second frame, with
Alex Mack's colossal slam dunk being the dagger. Saint Ignatius would own a 51-23 lead entering halftime, with
Kalli Johnson and
Damon Friery both scoring in double digits. It was smooth sailing the rest of the way for the Cats, as they cruised to a 90-67 win over their rival Eagles.
The Wildcats had a day's rest but were back in action on Sunday at John Carroll University, playing in the Play-By-Play Classic against Olentangy Orange, the number two-ranked team in Ohio (MaxPreps). In a low-scoring affair, the Cats led 29-23 to close the first half. After back-and-forth runs by both teams, the game was tied at 52 at the end of regulation after the Pioneers ran out the clock for the last 90 seconds.
Saint Ignatius couldn't quite find a rhythm in overtime, while Olentangy Orange's Devin Brown imposed his will on the Cats' defense. Orange outscored Saint Ignatius 11-2 in overtime, leading to the Wildcats' third loss of the season.
The Wildcats are back in action at home on Saturday, taking on Akron Buchtel. Last year, the Wildcats beat Buchtel in Akron by a score of 56-45. That game will tip-off at 7:00 PM, with JV and Freshman games taking place directly beforehand.
