LAKEWOOD, OH - The Saint Ignatius Wildcats continue to shine, picking up their fifth District Title in a row against Canton GlenOak on Saturday at Lakewood High School. The win improved their record to 20-4, marking their second straight 20-win season.
The Wildcats started hot, as the Golden Eagles had no answer for Damon Friery. Behind stellar offensive rebounding, the Cats jumped out to an 18-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Heading into the second, the Cats continued to pressure the Golden Eagles. Pressure was key for the Wildcats, as they excelled at forcing turnovers in the backcourt. After a quick first half, the Wildcats led 40-21.
The Golden Eagles, however, would not go down without a fight. Led by Senior Guard Bryce Broom, the Eagles started a fierce comeback, cutting the Wildcat lead to eleven during the third quarter.
Both teams entered the bonus midway through the fourth quarter in a very physical contest. Ultimately, the Golden Eagles' effort was not enough, and the Wildcats prevailed, winning their fifth consecutive District Championship with a 78-61 win.
Saint Ignatius will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on St. Edward at Kent State University in the Regional Semifinal. This will be the third matchup between the two programs this season, as the Wildcats have won both contests (90-67) and (68-51).
This is the first time both teams squared off against each other three times in a season since the 2020-21 season when the Wildcats knocked off the Eagles at the buzzer in the District Semifinal.
The game tips off at 7:00 p.m., and the SIBN will have live video coverage.
