The Volleyball Cats Open The Weekend 3-0

After a sweep of Walsh Jesuit on Opening Night, the WIldcats would defeat Mount Vernon and Thomas Worthington in a tri-match on Saturday.

OHIO CITY, OH - Saint Ignatius delivered a complete performance in a 3–0 sweep over Walsh, taking the sets 25–11, 25–8, and 25–22 behind standout efforts from Gavin Schafer, who piled up four aces and five kills, and Ethan Rossetti, who led the offense with timely swings and an ace to close the match. Jack Ragon, who led the team with six kills, and setter Andrew Brobbey, who ran the attack with precision while adding multiple aces and a dump kill. Strong contributions from Henry van Ginkel, Daniel Shumway, Frankie Jacono IV, Ryan Smola, Carson Nekic, Brandon Walrod, and Xavier Marflak rounded out a deep, disciplined performance.

Set One (25–11):
Saint Ignatius set the tone early with sharp serving and clean ball control, breaking a brief 2–2 tie with kills from Ragon and Rossetti off sets from Brobbey. Van Ginkel sparked a four-point run from the service line before Schafer took over, delivering four aces during a dominant stretch that pushed the lead to 13–3. Brobbey added a setter dump, the defense kept rallies alive with digs from Ragon and Rossetti, and the Wildcats closed the set with kills from Schafer, Rossetti, and Ragon to secure a commanding opening win.

Set Two (25–8):
The Wildcats overwhelmed Walsh with relentless serving pressure, starting with a 4–0 run behind Brobbey that included an ace and a kill from Nekic. Marflak added an ace to extend the lead, and then Walrod ignited the biggest run of the night, forcing multiple overpasses and errors while Shumway and Ragon converted in transition. Jacono added a block, Nekic hammered another kill, and Jacono followed with an ace to make it 20–6. Brobbey and Marflak each added late aces as Ignatius cruised to a dominant 25–8 finish.

Set Three (25–22):
Walsh pushed back in the final frame, but Ignatius responded with poise. Rossetti opened the scoring with a kill, and early blocks from Jacono and Shumway helped build a 3–0 lead. Walsh rallied to tie the set at 11–11 and later took a brief 20–19 lead, but the Wildcats answered with a clutch kill from Marflak and a service error forced by pressure. Van Ginkel delivered a key kill to make it 23–21, Rossetti added another to reach set point, and he sealed the sweep with a decisive ace for the 25–22 victory.
Saint Ignatius' blend of serving pressure, balanced offense, and steady defense defined the match from start to finish, showcasing a team playing with confidence, depth, and early-season sharpness.

The JVa Team (1-0) won their match 25-20, 25-27, 25-12.  With strong performances by Matt Kerns with 12 aces and three kills, Liam Meyerhoeffer with six aces and four kills, and Josh Zorc six aces and three kills.

MOUNT VERNON, OH - Saint Ignatius (3-0) powered past Mount Vernon in a decisive 3–0 sweep, taking the sets 25–14, 25–19, 25–22 behind a balanced and highly efficient team performance. The Wildcats were led by Ethan Rossetti, who finished the match with double-digit kills, multiple digs, and a strong serving run; Gavin Schafer, who added nine kills and four aces; and setter Andrew Brobbey, who distributed the ball with precision while contributing over 25 assists, multiple digs, and a block. Jack Ragon delivered one of his strongest matches of the season with 15 kills and an ace, while Carson Nekic and Henry van Ginkel combined for six blocks. Simon Pham anchored the backcourt with double-digit digs, helping Saint Ignatius control the match from start to finish.

Set One (25–14):
Mount Vernon opened with early pressure, but Ignatius quickly settled in behind strong passing from Ragon and Rossetti. Ragon delivered the first kill of the match, and Rossetti followed with two more to tie the score at 3–3. From there, the Wildcats took control. Schafer and Rossetti each added kills to push the lead to 7–6 before Ragon ignited a major run with a kill and an ace. Schafer then took over from the service line, delivering back-to-back aces to extend the lead to 18–10. Rossetti and Ragon continued to score in transition, and Nekic added a block to push the margin to 21–12. Ragon closed the set with a kill off a Brobbey set, sealing a dominant 25–14 opening frame.

Set Two (25–19):
The second set began as a tight battle, with the teams trading points to 5–5 before Rossetti and Schafer delivered consecutive kills to give Ignatius a 7–5 edge. Mount Vernon responded with a brief run to tie the set at 9–9, but the Wildcats answered immediately. Walrod entered and steadied the offense, assisting on a kill from Ragon and helping spark a 5–1 surge. Nekic added a block, and Marflak delivered an ace to push the lead to 14–11. Mount Vernon fought back to within one at 16–15, but Ignatius closed the door with a composed finish—Pham's passing stabilized the serve-receive, Rossetti added two more kills, and van Ginkel delivered a block to make it 22–17. Ragon and Schafer each scored late, and the Wildcats secured the set 25–19.

Set Three (25–22):
Saint Ignatius came out firing in the third set, jumping to a 6–2 lead behind kills from Schafer, Nekic, and Ragon, plus an ace from Marflak. Mount Vernon responded with a strong serving run to tie the set at 9–9, but the Wildcats regained momentum with a kill from Ragon and a block from Nekic. The teams traded points to 12–12 before Schafer hammered a kill and Marflak added another ace to push the lead to 14–12. Mount Vernon again rallied, tying the set at 18–18, but Ignatius showed poise down the stretch. Ragon delivered a kill off a Walrod set, Ryan Smola added an ace to reach set point, and Nekic finished the match with a kill through the middle for a 25–22 victory and the sweep.

Saint Ignatius' combination of efficient attacking, dominant serving, and steady defensive play defined the match, with multiple players contributing across all phases. The Wildcats' depth, discipline, and execution allowed them to control the match from start to finish in a strong three-set win over Mount Vernon.

The next match is Wednesday, 3/18, at home against Brunswick at 7 p.m. in Sullivan Gym.  

JVa (1-2) lost 14-25, 19-25.  The team was led by Liam Meyerhoeffer, who had four aces and 4 four kills; Zach Hein & Joel Serrano had two kills and a block each; and Kris Lynch had two aces and four assists.
