BROOKLYN, OH - On an ideal night under a full September moon, the Saint Ignatius freshman football team showcased their skills and grit, defeating the Archbishop Hoban Knights with a final score of 28-22. Hosted at Brooklyn High School, this regular-season face-off between two of the premier programs in the area proved to be a thrilling contest from start to finish.
The Wildcats set the tone early, taking a 21-12 lead by halftime, courtesy of an explosive start. Billy Cole paced the offense, racking up three touchdowns that largely dictated the flow of the night. The first quarter alone saw Cole scoring twice, creating an early advantage for the Wildcats.
Alongside Cole, Jake Mikin's dynamic quarterback play was pivotal, with three touchdown passes and an extraordinary 15-yard jump throw to Joey DiBaggio. The offense was complemented well by strong performances on defense and special teams, where the Wildcats were the first team this season to score more than 6 points against the freshman Knights.
Jake Lamirand's 23-yard touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter was critical, breaking the momentum and ensuring a Wildcat victory. The offensive line, including stalwarts like Nygel Wilson, Colin Beran, Luke Spinos, Bob Lopresti, Tommy O'Malley, and Peter Whiteside, provided crucial protection and openings throughout the game. The defense was equally robust, with players like Cal Smetana stepping up with sacks and tackles, critical in curbing the Knights' high-octane offense.
The special teams unit also played a vital role, highlighted by Kyle Ritt's perfect kicking performance and Teague Deinhart's impressive effort once again.
Defensive backs coach Regan Fitzpatrick '92 expressed his excitement after the pivotal win, stating, "Huge win for these boys. Everyone stepped up physically, which was key. Total team effort."
The Wildcats are now 3-1 for the season and are gearing up to face Toledo Central Catholic on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 10 a.m. from TCC. The Wildcats continue to build on their season with high hopes and excellent team spirit, ready to take on the next challenge.
